Dallas Animal Services’ Veterinary Medical Division is focused on continuous improvement and strives to improve the quality of life and continuously increasing successful release for the animals in our shelter’s care through medical intervention. A preferred veterinary assistant / veterinary technician candidate for this Fast-paced, data-driven position will be detailed oriented, have experience in Shelter Medicine or herd management and experience initiating and supervising medical processes, procedures and inventory.
Prepares for and assists veterinarians with routine and emergency medical procedures to ensure activities are conducted in an efficient manner.
Collects and prepares biological samples to examine samples under microscope, conducts lab tests, and reports results to veterinarians.
Monitors animals' general health while in facilities and vital signs during procedures and while recuperating.
Assists veterinarians with and administers prescribed medications to animals in order to provide support and nursing care.
Prepares, sterilizes, and monitors surgical instrument packs and supplies for surgical procedures and treatment.
Assists in maintaining the inventory of pharmaceuticals, equipment, and supplies and restocks medical kits to ensure supplies are readily available.
Evaluates the general condition and disposition of animals to determine which animals have the best chance for adoption.
Maintain accurate records on all animals.
Working Conditions & Hazards:
Works in laboratory and outdoors.
Exposed to illnesses, possible injury from animals, drugs, and chemicals.
One (1) year of experience as a veterinary assistant/technician working in a veterinary clinic or animal shelter/animal control setting
An Associate degree (or higher) in an animal/veterinary science or veterinarian technology field will meet the education and experience requirements
A current Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA) certificate issued by the Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) will meet the education and experience requirements
LICENSE(S) and/or CERTIFICATION(S):
Must obtain Euthanasia certification issued by the Texas Department of State Health Services (TDSHS) within probationary period
Must obtain Certified Veterinary Assistant (CVA) Introduction certification issued by the Texas Veterinary Medical Association (TVMA) within one (1) year of appointment
NO Felony Drug offenses within the last 10 years
NO Animal Cruelty convictions
Availability to work varying shifts including evenings, weekends and holidays
College coursework in animal/veterinary science, veterinary assistant certification, animal control officer certification or euthanasia technician certification is a plus. Experience in a high quality, high volume spay and neuter clinic is a plus
