Primary Directive: The Veterinary Technician Manager will oversee all the technical support staff team (VAs and CVTs) by working closely with the leadership team to ensure quality patient care throughout the hospital. The Veterinary Technician Manager is an essential and important part of the team. As a Technician Manager you are expected to inspire your teammates to achieve excellence. A Technician Manager is in charge of overseeing the flow of the team, training of technical staff, staff performance and overall knowledge of medicine and patient care. This position is 80% patient/client/staff interaction and 20% administrative in nature.
Responsible for projecting future needs and planning with regards to technical support staff with the support of the Practice Manager.
Set monthly staff schedule for technical support staff (CVTs and VAs) that serves the needs of the hospital for day to day operational management and ensure proper coverage.
Responsible for cultivating and motivating team to a high performing, highly communicative culture in accordance with Brook-Falls Veterinary Hospital’s mission and core values.
Foster a collaborative and educational environment for the technical team while providing support and direction.
Lead a team of Certified Veterinary Technicians and Veterinary Assistants in their performance of a variety of technical and client education duties that facilitate the work of the veterinarians; ensure Standard Operation Procedures and Standards of Care/Best Practices are followed.
Develop training program and training schedules for new team members and the continuing education of current staff members. Encourage skill advancement. Ensure all certification signage is posted throughout the Hospital.
Answer calls relating to pet care, medical/surgical needs as directed from the front office. Educate clients and technical staff regarding policies where required.
Knowledge regarding related federal and state animal health laws and regulations including OSHA. Ensure that the hospital and its employees are in compliance with regulations.
Develop and oversee completion of daily checklists and weekly maintenance logs.
Monitor staff periodically throughout the day, encourage productivity, discourage behaviors that may be detrimental to the positive atmosphere of the work environment.
Monitor compliance to job descriptions and “to do” lists. Ensure adherence to policies and procedures in accordance with employee handbook and hospital standards operating procedures and standards of care/best practices.
Make recommendations to the Practice Manager concerning personnel matters. Discuss disciplinary actions needed with the Practice Manager and assist with follow through.
Resolve informal employee complaints; provide a general explanation of the nature and basis for hospital personnel policies and procedures. Maintain effective employee-management communication.
Intervene/oversee personnel issues and assist with conflict resolution
Personally direct on-the-job training for new hires.
Create and maintain monthly schedule according to hospital needs. Maintain attendance records including all call- ins, late, early out, and absences (unexcused and excused). Make decisions regarding time off requests, balancing needs of hospital and employee.
Plan, schedule, conduct Technician meetings and maintain meeting minutes.
Act as a liaison between Practice Manager and team members.
Handle performance evaluations for all CVT and VA team members in conjunction with Practice Manager.
Organize, present and/or schedule Lunch and Learns, product training sessions, etc.
Working as CVT within the hospital schedule with time allotted weekly for administrative duties.
Assist the Practice Manager with other duties as assigned.
Required Personal Skills:
Broad knowledge of veterinary protocols/best practices.
Ability to demonstrate mastery of all routine technician skills such as:
Anesthesia Induction/Monitoring as well as surgical assistance
Hospitalized Patient Care
Safety Protocols and Cleaning Standards
Ability to communicate effectively with clients, staff members and lead co-workers.
Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
Ability to read and interpret documents such as medical records, vaccine histories, medical labels, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
Ability to speak effectively before small groups of customers or employees of the hospital.
Ability to successfully communicate with diverse personality types.
Ability to quickly grasp and master technological advancements in computer performance/electronic methods of veterinary care and practice.
Must be able to work all hours hospital is open.
Standing/Walking 90 % of time.
Moderate lifting - up to 40 lb.
Bending and kneeling.
Current certification as a Veterinary Technician in the state of Wisconsin with at least four (4) years of practice experience and strong medical knowledge. High School diploma required.
Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university preferred but not required; or two-four years related experience as a technician in a leadership/management role and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must demonstrate desire to continue learning in veterinary medicine and management/leadership. Proficiency with computers, including Internet/Social Media, Microsoft Office, Word, Excel, and AVImark preferred.
Ability to complete assigned tasks in a timely manner and without direct supervision.
Must demonstrate skills in conflict resolution.
