Calling all future veterinarians and veterinary dentists!  Please join us as part of your training in becoming a world class veterinarian.  We are a privately run practice group consisting of 2 general practice/urgent care locations, and a dental specialty in the northwest suburbs of Chicago.  We offer externship opportunities for current veterinary students.  Your externship will consist of spending one-on-one time with our experienced doctors and boarded dentists offering mentorship in aspects of general practice and specialty dentistry including client communication, case management, hospitalization, surgery, specialty dentistry, as well as and business management.  We practice high quality advanced medicine, while providing compassionate care to the cherished small town communities we serve.

PROGRAM STRUCTURE:

Veterinary externs will spend time in 1 or more of our locations based on your interest (Animal Care Centers of Barrington and Buffalo Grove,  Barrington Animal Dental Specialty, Illinois).  

• 2 to 8 week externships available
• Each week will consist of rotations through the different departments
  • General Practice Appointments – developing treatment plans for wellness appointments, providing care and plans for sick patients, and communicating with staff and clients as well as writing medical reports for outpatients
  • Surgery – review preoperative care plans, place IV catheters, review bloodwork, scrub in and learn surgery, and provide post operative monitoring plans and reports.
    • 3rd/4th year students that have completed a spay/neuter rotation will have the chance to practice spays/neuters with a trainer by your side
  • Dental Specialty Consults –  for more dental experience, shadow the board certified dentist and resident in seeing consults to learn more about dental specialty cases
  • Dental Specialty Procedures –  assist with procedures such as root canals, vital pulpotomies, mass removals and jaw fracture repairs
  • Business management – (optional) learn more about business management, financing, human resources, and general day to day tasks of running a business
• Housing available
• Hands on training with experienced doctors, dental specialists, and practice owner

Requirements

WHO WE’RE LOOKING FOR:

Our externs are current veterinary students interested in small animal practice and dental specialty who are also enthusiastic and possess a drive to learn and excel in their field.  We treat our externs as members of our team who maintain the high quality medicine and standards of our practices.  Our externs will be:

•       Currently enrolled in an accredited DVM program
•       Authorized to work in the United States
•       Insured with professional liability insurance (provided free of charge by AVMA PLIT – please consult their website avmaplit.com/products/student-liability/
