Description
The Bangor Humane Society (BHS) medical team, led by our full-time shelter veterinarian, is
seeking a compassionate and dedicated Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) to join our
team. We are looking for someone with strong technical skills, resilience, and a genuine passion
for providing quality care. If you thrive on building meaningful connections with patients and are
committed to expanding access to veterinary services for vulnerable pets in the greater Bangor
community, we would love to hear from you.
About Us
At BHS, our medical team provides high-quality, compassionate care for a wide range of
animals, including dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, and more. Under the guidance of our
shelter veterinarian, we strive to reduce the length of stay for pets awaiting treatment or surgery
and have expanded our in-house capabilities to include dental procedures and other non-routine,
non-emergency surgeries (such as enucleations, mass removals, and amputations). We also
extend access to care in our community through spay/neuter and vaccination clinics.
Position Summary
The LVT supports shelter pets by working closely with the veterinarian and animal care staff to
provide examinations, administer treatments and vaccinations, assist with surgeries, and maintain
thorough medical records. This role collaborates across departments, including shelter operations
and foster care, to ensure pets receive the best possible care.
Medical & Technical Duties
- Perform intake exams, administer medications, and execute treatment plans under
 veterinarian supervision.
- Assist in surgeries, including anesthesia monitoring, IV catheter placement, intubation,
 and post-operative recovery.
- Conduct diagnostic tests (bloodwork, urinalysis, cytology, fecal exams) and collect
 laboratory samples.
- Provide emergency first aid to sick or injured animals.
- Maintain and sterilize instruments, monitor inventory, and dispense medications with
 clear instructions.
Communication & Leadership
- Serve as a resource for shelter staff with medical questions.
- Communicate with local veterinary hospitals to arrange referrals and follow-up care.
- Educate staff, fosters, and adopters on animal health, nutrition, and care needs.
- Assist in training and mentoring non-medical staff as needed.
Animal Care & Shelter Support
- Safely restrain animals for exams and procedures.
- Support cross-training into animal care functions (feeding, cleaning, etc.).
- Monitor daily animal health and behavior, reporting changes promptly.
What We’re Looking For
- Positive attitude and professional demeanor.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively across departments.
- Flexibility and poise in stressful situations.
- Dedication to advancing medical services within the shelter and community.
Thank you for your interest in this opportunity. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
While we truly appreciate the time and effort each applicant puts into their submission, we may
only be able to contact those whose qualifications closely align with the role.
Requirements
- Current LVT certification from an AVMA-accredited program.
- Maine licensure or ability to obtain licensure.
- 1–2 years of experience as a veterinary technician preferred.
- Valid Maine driver’s license and reliable transportation.
- Comfortable with anesthesia monitoring, venipuncture, and patient handling.
- Excellent communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and veterinary software systems.
- Work performed in an animal shelter/clinic environment with exposure to noise, odors,
 disinfectants, and zoonotic diseases.
- Frequent handling of animals in varying states of health and temperament.
- Ability to lift 50 lbs. with or without accommodations.
- Physical requirements include bending, lifting, kneeling, and standing for extended
 periods (8–10-hour shifts).
- Ability to work occasional extended hours during emergencies.
