An Internship in Racing Performance Horse is offered at the Hagyard Equine Medical Institute from June, 2017 to June, 2019. The two year program involves working at the Davidson Surgery Center under the direct supervision of 6 surgeons for the first year, followed by a second year with Dr. Nathan Chaney at racetracks in Kentucky and Florida. The Racing Performance Horse Internship provides an unparalleled learning experience in both a clinical setting, which has an annual surgical caseload of more than 6,000 procedures, and at the racetrack. The Internship represents an exceptional opportunity for an individual who would like to focus on the various challenges of equine surgery and the racing performance horse.
The objectives of the internship are to allow the participant the opportunity to spend the first year immersing themselves in the dynamic caseload seen at the Davidson Surgery center. Hagyard surgeons are world renowned, setting the highest standards in both emergency and elective procedures, including orthopedics, dystocias, colic, and standing laparoscopy. This surgical expertise is complemented at the center by a broad range of diagnostics, such as scintigraphy, digital radiology, ultrasound, and MRI.
The second year will be spent at racetracks in Kentucky and Florida. Typical cases the intern will see include equine medicine and diagnostics relating to racetrack and performance horse practice (such as examination of performance horses under saddle on the racetrack, diagnosis and treatment of various types of lameness in the racing performance horse, and advanced instruction on equine international horse sales).
